I located my expert for my project through my Law and Justice teacher. I told my teacher Mr. Hubbard about my book and project on both Vietnam and war veterans with PTSD. He told me about his father Jim Hubbard who was in Vietnam. He told me his father would be a great person to interview if I wanted good information. So his father agreed to do an interview over email. Jim Hubbard also sent my questions to his Vietnam comrade Reggie Hamilton and he answered them as well.

The process of writing the emails to Mr. Hubbard was very different compared to most emails I write. The emails had to be professional business letters. It was a different format where I had to write a formal introduction, as well as, end my emails with sincerely etc. Writing emails like this really helped me to get ready for work or college.

I learned so much from my experts they answered so many questions in-depth with their stories from Vietnam. They both told me they were in their early twenties when they served in the war, although, only one was force to be drafted. One of my experts talked about his counselor asking his why he thought he didn’t have PTSD. He said PTSD is usually caused by traumatic first hand experiences.. He said he didn’t have any strange experiences, but he feared not knowing what was going to happen next while at war. He also talked about a comrade who committed suicide during the war. There is so much good information that my experts gave me.

What I learned about finding and contacting an expert was to ask anybody I know if they knew someone in the war. Just not ruling out common everyday people I interact with everyday was something I learned because they can be the people with the best stories. Also finding experts that are doctors that are close to where I live because that way I can find someone who will be sure to do an interview with me. So basically, I learned to find a common person who knows first hand about my topic.

Advice I have for any student interested in doing an interview with an expert for a project is to do it. An interview with an expert is great to get first hand information on the topic of their project. It can add depth to their project with real life stories or information. Also when finding an expert I would tell them to try to find a person close to them rather than find someone on a database online because they don’t always reply. There are so many people that they would never expect that may know about their topic and they should definitely ask everyone they know. Finding someone close could also make it easier for them to have face to face interviews.

The four multi genre projects I made were a playlist on a character, a Glogster, a Facebook page for a character, and a poem written by me. The play-list was on the character Norman Bowker in my book The Things They Carried. Norman Bowker was a soldier who committed suicide because he could not adapt to home after being back from war. I came up with the assumption that he might have had PTSD so I made a play-list with some sad songs that speak wither about missing people at home or not knowing what to feel. The songs go with during the war and after. The Glogster talked about my topic and showed why I chose it and what PTSD was, etc. I also put videos in that were about PTSD and suicide that seemed relevant to my topic, as well as, interesting. The third multi genre project was the Facebook page for character Norman Bowker. On this project I made his friends on Facebook his comrades from war. In the groups section on the Facebook I used groups related to the Vietnam War and PTSD. I just wanted to make a Facebook that would look like a Facebook of a real soldier at that time of war if they had such programs. The last multi genre project was a poem I wrote to express how they felt about the noises at night in Vietnam. I wanted to incorporate some things the characters said about the jungle speaking to them.

It was surprising that Tim O’Brien held so much guilt against Bobby Jorgenson the new medic. Jorgenson had replaced O’Brien’s old friend and medic Kat Riley. O’Brien held this guilt because he had gotten shot in combat in his rear and Jorgenson was new and froze. He did not help O’Brien right away and caused O’Brien to go into shock. However, Jorgenson did eventually help him and injected him with morphine while holding O’Brien down, who was yelling and screaming going in and out of delirium. This caused O’Brien to play a prank on Jorgenson back at base along with Azar. They made noises like gun shots and shot of flares. Not only that they used bags of flour to make Jorgenson think they had shot off real tear gas grenades in his bunker. However, Jorgenson caught O’Brien doing this saying he was sick and had a problem and Azar said the same. Jorgenson also asked if they were even now trying to finally move on from their tension. I thought this whole situation was strange because he went to so extremes to torture and scare Jorgenson.

I never thought that one of the most stable soldiers in this war would go so insane. Rat Kiley seemed very stable being the medic. However, Kiley began to talk strangely about strange topics like evil Vietnam bugs. He was very paranoid about what he described as bugs with messed up DNA, he thought the bugs had been chemically altered by napalm and tear gas. Riley then began to itch himself making scabs and then itching the scabs. He began probing for enemies no one could see and lost his sense of direction. Kat eventually doped himself up with pain medication from his medical kit and then shot himself in the foot. He was then sent to Japan. No one ever did say anything about Kat shooting himself in the foot on purpose because they all knew he had to get out of there.

A quote I found interesting was about a childhood friend named Linda. O’Brien said, ”Linda was nine then, as I was, but we were in love. And it was real”(O’Brien 228). I thought this was interesting because this young childhood love taught him so much about life and death before he went to war. Linda was a little girl you he dated when he was nine years old. Linda wore a red hat that covered her hair and most of her head. Kids always tried to take this hat off her head and finally achieved this one day in class. When they pulled the hat off they found bald spots and stitches on Linda’s head, she had a brain tumor. She died near the end of summer. Tim O’Brien went to go see her dead body and felt very strange about seeing her dead body. This did not change when he was in war, he still was uneasy seeing dead bodies. This quote is also interesting because after Linda died he began to dream about her and believed she was living in his dreams. He would sleep all the time so he could see Linda again. All of this shows, how O’Brien acted towards death during war because of Linda’s death when he was a child.

Telling Story of Your Research Experience.

I have added so many types of content on my Netvibes. There are different types of widgets to put on Netvibes. I have photos and videos that relate to my topic. Also I have RSS feeds that keep up with what I have been doing with my project on sites such as WordPress. When I add my content I separate them on certain pages so they are organized. For example, I put all my RSS feeds, search engines, and anything that shows someone what I have been doing on my project so they can keep up. Another tab I have all my pictures and videos so they can see some more in depth stuff than what I post on my other sites.

This portal impacts my researching greatly by organizing my items on my site, as well as, being able to put more interesting widgets onto my site so people can really see what my project is about. This is definitely an essential tool for me because of what it allows me to do.I think that Netvibes shows I am a good learner and researcher. People who visit my Netvibes get to see what I know about my topic and what I am learning. Netvibes also reflects my book and what my project is about, as well as, what I have researched on it. It shows all of the blogs I have written about my project. Not only that, but it shows my Google site which shows almost everything I have done and am about to do.

My research questions vary from introducing my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder topic to the suicidal aspect. I have a question to tell what PTSD is and also how soldiers get PTSD. I also wanted to know how soldiers get PTSD. Why soldiers have suicidal tendencies when they have PTSD is something I want to know. Something else I would like to find out id how you can help soldier with PTSD. Not only that I want to know what programs or organizations there are.

I want to explain what PTSD is and how soldiers get it after being in war because of the experiences they when through and the sites they saw. Knowing how soldiers get PTSD is important to because that’s usually the first step to finding out how to help it. Suicidal tendencies are usually caused by being depressed and being depressed goes hand in hand with PTSD so I want to focus on those serious PTSD cases. So far I don’t know what you can do to help with PTSD other than go to therapy or a special organization or program that specializes in PTSD, depression, and suicide. Knowing all of this and finding more about it can really help me shed light on this issue so it becomes more important.

If I were the character I would have done the same by bringing my daughter to Vietnam. Although, I would have told her more stories and about my experiences there. I would have told her about my friends that died and lived, as well as, the crazy things we did. Since we were in Vietnam I would have brought her to the places that some of these events took place at. Also another thing I would have explained to her was about the sounds he heard in the night that drove him crazy. Basically, if I was him I would have taken advantage of the opportunity to show someone what the War in Vietnam was really like. Another thing I would change was lying to her about not ever killing someone, once she got old enough I would have told her.

I feel there is irony in the fact that Kiowa died in the waste field. After all these men had been through someone killed him that was so random. Also Kiowa’s death was almost a turning point for everyone in the book. They all blamed themselves for the death because they couldn’t help him. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross was one of the soldiers that felt extremely guilty about Kiowa’s death because he led the troops to the waste field that left everyone scarred forever. He was also the one who had to write the letter to Kiowa’s father and that left him feeling extremely guilty. Another soldier felt guilty because he had shown a picture of his girlfriend to Kiowa and after that forgot about him because he was stuck in his thoughts and didn’t notice Kiowa sinking until it was too late.

A quote that stood out to me was about Norman Bowker. “The letter covered seventeen handwritten pages, its tone jumping from self-pity to anger to irony to guilt to a king of feigned indifference. He didn’t know what to feel. In the middle for the letter, for example, he reapproached himself for complaining too much:”(O’Brien 156). This quote stood out to me very much because it talked about his mixed feelings after he came back from the war and how he couldn’t adjust to being back home. He had hung himself in the local YMCA and this goes with my topic for my presentation. He obviously had PTSD and suicidal tendencies since he committed suicide. This quote proved that many soldiers ended up with PTSD after the war in Vietnam. Also it proved that soldiers with PTSD sometimes thought about or went through with committing suicide.

Netvibes has still been very successful for me to research for my project. Adding pictures and being able to research pictures right on the Netvibes page has been very efficient for me. Being able to do so many things on Netvibes has been helpful especially since I can add some of the same gadgets in Netvibes that I can get in IGoogle. Netvibes allows me to also personalize it to fit my style and show my own personality. I can edit the title parts of the different modules and change their colors to color code what each of the modules are.

Netvibes has begun to be a program that I might start using all the time. Netvibes helps keep my RSS feeds and programs organized as much as IGoogle does. However, I seem to still favor I google because I can get to everything very easily from IGoogle that I can not do in Netvibes as easily. Both let me keep up with my emails and google calendars to keep track of what I need to do. However, with I google I can get to my Google site and Goggle Documents which I use very often because of how easy they are to use.

A research victory that I had was finding different types of resources and not just the old books and website articles. I have found a video and I also am looking to the ItubesU videos/ podcast. Being able to have a variety of sources is very helpful and refreshing to me. I like being able to try new ways to further skills my research skills.

I don’t understand why Dobbins said he wanted to be a monk. I don’t understand this mostly because he could barely be still when he was in church as a child. Also he was not very religious. He said he was never interested in what he called, the religious stuff, he said he just wanted to help people and be nice to them.I don’t understand why he ever thought about being a priest or a monk because they base the way the live solely on their faith in God. He just kept talking about how he wanted to visit sick people and just visit those less fortunate. Doing so is not what being a monk or priest is all about; you have to believe in God.

“”The Silver Star?” his father might have said. “Yes, but I didn’t get it. Almost, but not quite.” And his father would have nodded, knowing full well that many brave men do not win medals for their bravery, and that others win medals for nothing”( O’ Brien 141). This quote stood out to me because he is saying what it seems like he would want his father to say when he tells him the story of almost winning the medal. He describes how he would have won the Silver Medal if he weren’t so grossed out by the smell of the waste field. In my opinion it shows how everyone is so caught up with who won medals in the war and who did not. However, some people won the Silver Medal for not doing anything while other soldiers did so much and got nothing in return. It is almost like he has to explain why he did not get the Silver Medal to get others to see why he should have and prove to them that he did something important. He also was acting out how he wanted his father to act while telling the story and wanting him to be interested and proud of what he did.

Possible big ideas about veterans and their issues that are emerging are how the soldiers feel about all the deaths seen in their time at war. One experience described in my reading this time was the death of a young man from the village My Khe. The soldier Kiowa killed him leaving him for a very gory sight for others to see while his comrade Azar was staring at the body as well. They talked about how the body resembled other things such as the blood, etc. Also Kiowa seemed very upset and irritable about the war because he kept snapping at Azar because of Azar’s comments about the body. He seemed to have felt remorse as he looked over the tiny frail body of the boy he killed. However, his comrades kept trying to point out that at least it was not him lying there dead.

My topic for my I-Search paper is PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the suicidal behavior side of this disorder. This speaks to me because you are a very depressed person if you are thinking about suicide and I help raise money for a cause that’s similar to this for teens. I raise money for To Write Love On Her Arms which helps teens whoa are depressed, addicted to a substance, and harm themselves. This seemed very close to my heart also because many of my friends are going into the military or already have and the people I am researching about and shedding light on could one day be them if they go to war so this topic seemed very important. I think it is important to research this because you need to learn about topics in depth and really understand whats really going on with this issue. Its is also very important to research this topic because most people do not thing of the stress after being in a war deadly, but it is. You can get really depressed from being in a war and it can affect someone deeply causing them to be stressed and have mental issues.

What I do not know about my topic already is more in depth details of what I already know. I want to learn what memories or conditions specifically caused soldiers to get PTSD. Also I would like to know about what happiness when they get home that could make the PTSD worse or what could happen to their lives if they go on untreated. I would also like to hear first hand stories told by soldiers who suffered with PTSD. I want to know so many things about why and how these soldiers get this disorder. I want to know what they went through while having the disorder. I want to all about this issue inside and out so I can relate and really see what these soldiers really go through after the and during these war.

My research skills have improved even more since the last research project. Evernote is one of the programs that has helped me with this. Evernote has made it easier for me to bookmark my sources. It helps me to organize my sources in a very efficient way, as well as, practical way. I can leave notes reminding me to do things for my projects. Also Evernote lets me make to do lists on my sources, so I can keep up with what I am doing with that source. For my sources I can cite videos, articles, etc. However with Evernote, I can highlight the part of my source that I want to bookmark. This program has helped me very much to keep me organized and to better my research skills for this upcoming project.

Another resource I have used recently that has helped me is the iGoogle Rss feeds to our class agenda, as well as, iGoogle all together. The class agenda is very helpful because it is right there on my iGoogle page that I see everyday, so I can now know when I have homework assignments and review what we worked on in class. IGoogle in general has been helpful because I make to do lists, so I can check off when I finish assignments for class. Also, I make sticky notes to remind myself of quick notes for things. I google also allows me to subscribe to different programs and Rss feeds. I google has made me a more sufficient student since I have used it.
